PAST WORKS
"It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis"
Henri Cartier Bresson
This state of presence enables Cartier Bresson to capture his famous "decisive moment." For painting if I capture a moment, where both heart and head are as one - is that not everything. There's a reason mandalas were and are used as a tool for meditation. Simplified down, yoga supports the quietening of our brain, in Sanskrit citta vritti nirodah meaning the cessations of fluctuations of the mind. As yoga supports the body, the mandala creates the space in the mind. When looking, you can't help but pause, observing something new; the pocket opening of silence.
Kaleidoscopic Seeds and Sun
For the person that craves the warmest pocket of sun in their room, the brightest explosion of colour, the grounding repetition held by sacred geometry at it's core.
The 'template' was created was created Forest Row, it's multiple seeds expanding out. The mandala took a life of it's own and having travelled through seasons this kalaedescopic painting is here to give our planet love in abundance.

Photography and Drawing: A Parallel
Photography is, for me, a spontaneous impulse coming from an ever-attentive eye, which captures the moment and it's eternity.
Drawing, with its graphology, elaborates what our consciousness grasps in an instant.
Movies tell a story visually.
Photography is an immediate reaction, a meditation.

Henri Cartier Bresson, 1985

And therefore is a mandala closer to analogue photography, our consciousness, the unconscious pattern making and colour co-ordinating.

A simple vortex of clashing and attracting
Some people want simplicity and others, simply want to see the complexity of it all - in front of them in life.

This is mushroom mycelium growing roots through the walls, to the neighbours, the streets, the hills, the earth, arms stretched around. Not sure why it became so biblical when in reality it is quite simply: bright colours, clashing and attracting all at once.

A Guy Called Jimi
Sometimes the circles and shapes come up with a music genre in mind from the beginning - even if we are living in the world of a different genre every song.

Jimi has stepped in once more, the psychedelic guitar and growl of his lungs. Finishing Patti Smith's - Just Kids and her popping in, their close parameters as custodians of the Chelsea Hotel...my teenage brain adores this time in history. Art puts me in it, imagination and timelines exploding.

Seasons Change, Cycles Change
Seasons and symbols of change, old life and new rising. Copper leaf and warm colours. Mark making and looking into the sun, feeling the warmth as the days got cold, nights get short.

I made this following mandalas and the cosmos teachings at Sacred School of Geometry. Reconnecting with nature and the stars in the sky, putting these patterns on paper (and boggling my mind.)

Little Wing
Sometimes 70s art posters and music icons pop into my brain when painting. I see poetry and feel the colours in the songs. It gets a bit brooding but painting is another little piece of my heart here baby (Janis an ode to you). At certain points in my cycle I connect so deeply with the words of these young men and women who left this planet too early. Jimi above as is below.

"Well, she's walking through the clouds,
With a circus mind that's running wild,
Butterflies and Zebras,
And Moonbeams and fairy tales.
That's all she ever thinks about.
Riding with the wind."

SEXSSSUUAALLLL ENERGY
Sexual energy, that was my brief, meditate on that :)

Bringing together colours that warm and electrify the soul, explore symbology. I tried hard to not just cover my mandalas in yonis - numerous people sport them for me like Where's Wally of symbols.
This is my vibration of energy. Something deeply personal, but when broken down and blurred in the eyes all it is, is circles.

MEXICANila KATALina
To hold your heart across the planet, to run around and live and settle and still come all the way back again. Glad to have you back my friend. Energy in each time capsule, holding it all in one place. An explosion of colour like you from all over the planet.

My Sensory Explosions
Golden circles, the whole piece makes me think of a fantastical clock, I'm always always pulled towards this idea of time, an idea, remember it was or is just an idea. Ticking forwards, clicking backwards it's possibly and ironically just a reminder to stay present.

For Matt who was brought up in India and wanted a little sensory reminder of his early life.

TRAVELLING MAN
Based on a bag that I bought for my brother travelling ten years ago. This is a piece that has family with it. My family are Vikings, they are travellers and I think I thought that travelling should come easy to me.
Travelling alone used to make my senses alerted to dangers, some present some non existent, heart rate peaks and days are intertwined with practices to bring me into the present. Travelling took my courage and built my faith and trust in myself. I wish I could go away and it all be fun and games but I'm like a Viking who gets easily lost and often will find a cosy hut where I aim to move forward and in that i hibernate.

COSMIC CERTAINTY
There are two things we can be sure about:

1. We are all made of stardust
2. No matter where we are, what we are doing, how we are feeling, planet earth will keep on turning.

I may have listened 0.05% in my science lessons but I know that much. I'm not sure I find anything more grounding and mind exploding at the same time.

GOLDEN CLEOPATRA
I have accepted that the introvert and extrovert work in and out of each other so fluidly it sometimes takes me getting it wrong to know which part of me needs the attention. The extrovert who loves people and strangers, learning stories and broadening my perspective purely from being around others - she has more recently been calling louder. "a sign of the times" no more no less.

Time Honoured
Do we want to measure this time, do we collectively want a way to analyse the space around us that isn't just statistics and words?
This is my clock, my drum, filling my space in the room. The lines and brush strokes have all come together in this final cycle of the mandala of the year.
During this piece I have felt like a screen printer, a stained glass window maker a clockmaker all in one.

HEART OPENER
Look into the centre, start with a gold dot. Let your eyes move around the bright red circle and then out to the lines, the embellishment and points. Follow each petal around slowly until you've reached the gold lining.
Breathe.
Observe the crimson colour palette all the way round, held in and orange circle. Move out into an expanded palette and take a deep breath as the petals blossom and pinks, golds, greens and blues come together.
Held in a blue night sky with with a white dotted frame. See the outer planetary rings holding you together as one.

Always with the music
One for hypnosis. From a thought formed in nature whilst listening to music I considered the wavelengths we hear that move up and down, they fall together to create vibrations. Painting this piece I wanted to practice working with paint and imitation gold leaf to create a meditative response to the vibrations around us.

ENERGY ENERGY ENERGY
A quote from Georgia O'Keefe is reason 10,00006 that I am forever continuing my colour bomb journey, "I found that I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for"

This creation was made for an amazing yoga teacher whose I started seeing around the same time I developed a strong interest in storytelling, and so the cycles of stories began intertwined with a love for moving my body and understanding of breath work on a whole new level.

We Play
The most important value, an actual RIGHT of a child. A child's language is play, in play they articulate their inner world as it is inside them. Adults need to do the same, we don't always have the words or find the time to express different corners of ourselves - so PLAY.

The First Clock
The mandala I made with intention as commission. As my grounding practice I was flipping the process around, created therapeutically for me, and handed over to another, letting go, the process as they are traditionally created.
